The Upaya Sangha of Tucson is pleased to offer a discussion group beginning on Wednesday, September 3rd, on a series of recorded lectures by Stephen Batchelor, offered at a “Secular Buddhist Retreat,” July of 2013, at Gaia House, Devon England.

This discussion group will meet the first and third Wednesdays, in seven sessions over fourteen weeks, beginning September 3rd. The course will engage those of you who have a solid grasp of the fundamentals (i.e., not-one; two-fold egolessness; three marks of existence; four foundations of mindfulness; five skandhas; six consciousnesses, etc). Referencing several suttas, the topics addressed include: mortality, solitude, urgency/aspiration to renunciation & realization, opinions & hubris, truth claims on the ultimate nature, defining features of awakening, karmic reward & retribution, rhetoric of schools, two-truths, living in emptiness.

Prior to our meetings, you will listen to Batchelor’s lectures and work through a study guide. Audio of the Secular Buddhist Retreat, including the referenced materials, will be provided to you on a disc. If you would like more information on the course content or have a question, please email christine-johnson@cox.net or call her at 207-8718.
